A Cure For Loneliness

So I got reacquainted with my chalk pastels this week, and let me tell you, I hope we never part again!

Whenever I see this one, I think "Can't you feel it's pain?" Name that movie!

This one, I call "Ginger Problems."

"I spent some time in the city of Osaka. It had been almost obliterated in the war, leaving the streets littered with debris and bomb craters. One broad thoroughfare had been lined with sycamore trees. The few that were left had shattered limbs and trunks yet had gathered the courage to send out a few new shoots and a meager crop of foliage. It was late fall, and a few yellow leaves were scattered by the breeze.
"A tiny Japanese girl in a tattered kimono was busily climbing over the rubble, gathering the sycamore leaves into a bouquet. She had found the one beautiful element in her world. In her there was hope. I have not forgotten that little girl. I think that witnessing the destruction and devastation of war and the resiliency of both man and nature cemented my inborn love for nature, birds, and animals."

Figure Sketches

All of these were done with conte' crayon on newsprint for BYU's Figure Drawing for Animators class.
